Islamophobia: destroying peace and unity of India in the time of a pandemic.

Islamophobia has reached its crest in India. Today, as the world battles against coronavirus which has already claimed lakhs of lives, India battles another threat- hatred against Muslims. Muslims are being detained, arrested, attacked, tortured and boycotted due to the emerging hatred against them. Even amidst the pandemic, Muslim activists, journalists and students are being detained and arrested.

Islamophobia is an issue that India is facing since decades but it took a completely different turn when the Indian authorities announced that they found a large number of Muslims who tested positive for coronavirus as they attended the religious congregation of Tablighi Jamaat. (The congregation was not only attended by  Indians but also by the people of other countries). No sooner did this news come to light than the extremist Hindu government (BJP) rulers started giving provocative statements and making derogatory comments nationally against Muslims giving rise to hatred among people. Many of them even called it “Corona Terrorism”. A deadly virus which affected millions of people across the globe, on entering the Indian shores was linked with religion.

The anti-Muslim media even called it “CoronaJihad” and this hashtag went trending on all social media platforms. According to Equality Labs, a digital advocacy group, the “CoronaJihad” hashtag was circulated 3,00,000 times. The Indian news channels came up with demeaning catchphrases and completely blamed the rise in coronavirus cases in the country on the meeting. They even called the people who attended the congregation as “suicide bombers” and “corona bombs.” The Indian media profiled the cases on the basis of religion. Muslims were accused of deliberately spreading coronavirus across the country. The outbreak of coronavirus gave the leaders of Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janta Party another reason to target Muslims.

Just a few months before the outbreak of COVID-19, the government of India passed the Citizenship Amendment Act. According to the CAA, non-Muslim immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who had arrived in India before Dec 31, 2014, will be granted citizenship automatically. The National Register of Citizens (NRC) which requires people to produce documents of ancestry to prove their citizenship was opposed to be implemented nationwide. It aimed at identifying the immigrants so it was feared that many Muslims who have been living in India for ages would be stripped off their citizenship rights and would be left stateless if they were not able to prove their citizenship. The act was the first time religion had been used as a criterion for citizenship under Indian Law. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) also called it “fundamentally discriminatory”.

The result of this act was protests and riots across different states in India. Delhi, the capital of India witnessed one of the worst riots in history. Even in such a sensitive situation, the RSS and BJP leaders didn’t back off in making derogatory comments inducing the supporters of the government to commit violence against Muslims. It ultimately led to destruction and deaths.

India has become an epicentre of Islamophobia. I don’t know when and how will it end. Oppression and discrimination on the basis of religion need to stop. Communalising every incident needs to stop. All religions are beautiful. Muslims are no different. Equality is what we need at this point of time. We need to unite and bring back love, peace and harmony in India.

    1. I was actually expecting a comment like this. What I actually mean is that one cannot blame a whole community because of few people which is actually happening in the country. Any incident takes place and the whole concern is shifted from the actual incident to the religious aspect.
There is a lot of hatred being filled in the hearts of people against Muslims by some politicians and media which is affecting the unity of the country.

      3. You know this is the problem of you bhakts. One post against your point of view and you’re saying ki dikh gaya kon bhakt kon dhongi. I pity you people because at the end this is the only defence mechanism you’re left with. Why can’t you admit that people have different point of views instead of getting offended?

  4. No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.

      1. Religious people often not mention secular, atheist and non-religious people, not worthy enough seemingly By the way atheist bloggers lynched, massacred and hacked to death not only one time in Muslim Bangladesh!

  5. What is wrong in the statement “all religions are beautiful”?
Also I’m not a dedicated religious person. My post is about how hatred towards one community is affecting the unity of the country and I just wrote down my opinion about it.

True. Islamophobia exists and sadly not for any lame reason.

  7. Shivani ji, you need to research on the topic a bit more. Also, there is another phobia called as “HINDUPHOBIA” which is prevalent in India since the Mughals invaded our country, Hindustan. Kindly research on Mughal invasion, Partition, Kashimiri Pandits exodus, Mumbai blasts, Godhra train burning and many more atrocities against Hindus. Hope to see an equally beautiful article on “HINDUPHOBIA” soon.

    1. Surely, I’ll come up with that article too. Also I’ve done all research about islamophobia prevailing in India and yet haven’t mentioned many things in this article as ot is a really vast topic.

  9. Honest and powerful opinions! and along with Islamophobia there is kind of Secular and Intellectual phobia going on in the nation. The loud secular-bashing, naming seculars as “secular-gang” and all, on national TV is a mockery of our constitution itself. Secularism is a prime constituent of Indian constitution and today, media has given such a negative outlook to this beautiful word and ts meaning. Shame on Indian Media and secular bashing “gang”!

  11. Thank you for sharing this. It hurts me that this is happening and that Muslims continue to be persecuted simply for existing. Being Muslim is not synonymous with terrorist and so many people just don’t make that distinction any more. What a sad state of affairs. I hope it has improved now? ❤

  12. I’ve recently reading some of your articles where you showed your worry about ‘Islamophobia in india’ which is matter of concern but when I look at your article where you call ‘kumbh mela’ as Super Spreader which is I think quite hindu phobic. Please don’t be a hypocrite.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. How was it Hinduphobic? I pointed out something wrong happening. Lakhs of people visited the Kumbh Mela in a single day and it was declared symbolic. Wasn’t it a super spreader? Was there any need for Kumbh Mela to take place during the pandemic?

      1. When kumbh mela started average cases was less than 30k/day and there are political rallies, protests, social gathering was happening at that time and when the cases started to rise they stopped the kumbh as a responsible organization but targeting only one is disgusting. also you forgot to tell that the recovery rate of india is highest in the world (95%) and the death rate is 218/million which is lowest in the world and quite less than countries like usa(1816/million)and that’s why I called you a hypocrite.

      2. Where in my blog am I targeting only one organization? I talk about the Government as well as the people of the country. I did not just talk about the Kumbh Mela. I talked about the rallies too. Last year the whole country went under a lockdown when there were 500-1000 cases and you are so lightly speaking about 30k cases as if they mean nothing. Everyone knew about the second wave before the Kumbh Mela took place so they could’ve stopped it from happening instead of waiting for cases to rise and then halting it. They stopped the Kumbh Mela when cases started to rise. But don’t you think that they could’ve done that way before?

      3. My question is that in your article you said that people blamed Tablighi jamaat for spreading Corona virus which is Islamophobic but you’re also doing the same by portraying kumbh mela for spreading Corona virus which I think is hinduphobic just like the way you think. Also you didn’t write about the recovery rate of india or least death rate in world in your article. Please stop this blame game.

      4. Firstly, I wrote this article a month back and at that time the recovery rate was declining not improving. Secondly, if you don’t see the difference between Tablighi Jamaat and Kumbh Mela then let me tell you about it. Tablighi Jamaat took place when people were unaware of coronavirus. People weren’t aware of it and people from different countries took part in it and there weren’t lakhs of people. There was no government involvement in it. Kumbh Mela on the other hand was permitted by the government at a time when we all knew how fatal the virus is. The government was well aware of the fact that our country does not have a well-developed health infrastructure and a boom in the cases could make the situation out of the hands. Even after all this, the event was declared symbolic as if the virus won’t spread to people taking part in the Kumbh Mela. Lakhs of people went there in a single day and after the Kumbh Mela got cancelled, Uttrakhand cases rose. I did not play the blame game, I put out facts.

      5. Let me tell you at the time of Tablighi jamaat people were unaware but government clearly said or told to stop all public gatherings but they still continue and when the government officials ask them about their identities or information they didn’t co-operate but when comes to the kumbh mela the government is who allows kumbh than the people came to visit and before government ordered the mela administration they already stopped the mela and also almost 90% devotees which came to the kumbh was not from the Uttrakhand then on which basis you’re clamming that the kumbh was the reason of rose of cases in Uttrakhand. Talking about the health infrastructure of india- India is ranked 10th in the world in terms of healthcare or infrastructure. Also there’s no matter to argue with someone who was portraying CAA as Anti-Muslim law but if you look at the facts that how our neighbour countries treat their minorities by suppress them, convert them. In Bangladesh the population of hindu declined from 29.7% to 8.5% same in Pakistan where it’s declined from 12.9% to less than 2%. The recent case was from Bangladesh where more than 22houses of hindus set to fire which killed more than 12 people’s. Talk about NRC every country has law’s like NRC it’s very similar to identity card and there are more than 15 types of documents that are admissable for NRC like Refugee Registration Certificate specially for refugees. Hope you understand and will stop this fake narrative.

      6. You call me Hinduphobic. It looks like you’re the one who is Islamophobic. You call me a hypocrite while you are the one mentioning here how our government is a hypocrite. When it came to Tablighi Jamaat they used every way to demean the Muslims called them Jihadis or Corona bombs inflicting hatred for them and when it came to Kumbh they permitted it even when there were lakhs of cases being reported of Coronavirus. According to you, if the government allows it then it is okay. No matter how dangerous and fatal it is and you call me a hypocrite. You need to stop justifying the Kumbh Mela and do you really believe in the stats shown to us? Lakhs of people visit there and they showed just 500-600 cases per day which in reality could be much higher. Even today the true stats of cases are not being shown. I don’t know how people like you don’t see anything wrong in the Kumbh Mela which was criticised internationally. India is ranked 10th in the world in terms of healthcare infrastructure yet we ran out of Oxygen, hospital beds and ventilators. I’ve Muslim friends and when anti Caa protests were going on, the police came to their houses at night and took people to the police station for no reason. India is the 2nd most populated country, they are not able to even help their citizens and you think they should bring people from other countries and create a ruckus? Don’t forget that it is a developing country, not a developed country. And even if they are bringing the minorities, why not bring the Muslim minority too who are being tortures in countries like Pakistan? If you still believe that your beloved government is trying to maintain peace in the country then I just hope you open your eyes soon. If only I were Hinduphobic, I would have completely blamed it on the Kumbh Mela instead of writing about people and rallies in my blog. But you are the one getting triggered.
